The sperm using test-tube in a laboratory in this medical procedure fertilizes an egg. Before starting this treatment, a few tests for fallopian tubes and uterus will be done to ensure that there is no abnormality. Some pre-cycle testing is performed like ovarian reserve, thyroid function, semen analysis of the male partner, etc.

Factors on which treatment’s success rate is dependent

Though IVF process is the most successful treatment of all, its success rate is dependent on some factors. Let us have a look at each of these factors in a discreet manner:
  • Age is one of the important factors that affect the success rate. If the female partner is young then there will be more number of healthy eggs. As your age increases, the ovarian reserve gets reduced.

  • Another factor is the multiple miscarriages. This, sometimes, also affects the success rates of the IVF treatment.

  • Your lifestyle also plays a crucial role in deciding the success rate of the fertility treatment. Quitting smoking and drinking are two major factors that can improve the chances of conceiving. In many studies and researches, it has been seen that couples that smoke has a lower implantation rate.

  • Fertility issues are also somewhat a major factor in the success rate of the IVF. If you are having ovarian dysfunction then this can also affect the success of the treatment. Ovulation plays the main role in conception, thus, ovulation medication is prescribed to the patients to increase the whole ovulation process.
Now, let us have a look at the systematic process that is performed during IVF. All these steps will give a brief idea about the process.

Ovarian stimulation

This is the first step of the treatment that will start on the first day of your period. The doctors for follicular study will call you. Doctors will prescribe you the medication for 8 to 14 days. These medications will the follicles in your ovaries to produce more eggs. In this process, the patient female partner will be given a few hormone injections so that multiple eggs are matured for egg retrieval.

Through ultrasounds and blood tests, the doctors will keep an eye on the entire follicular study. Trigger injection will also be provided to you in order to make the eggs ready for further process.

Retrieval of egg

After 36 hours of the trigger shot before the ovulation to occur, the process of egg retrieval will take place. This whole retrieval process will take around 20 to 30 minutes.  Eggs are removed from follicles in the ovaries in this normal surgical procedure.
  • An ultrasound is used so that the small needle gets the visual guide o to enter the ovary through the vagina.
  • You will be under general anesthesia so there won’t be any pain or discomfort.
  • The IVF experts with the help of a tubing section suction the fluid from the follicles. It is then handed to the embryologist who will find the egg from the follicular fluid. All the details are recorded for further process of the treatment.
Fertilization

Maturity and quality of the eggs are also tested in the laboratory. Then, these quality eggs are fertilized with the sperm of the male partner. The fertilization process is mostly done through the conventional insemination method.
  • In this method, sperm is kept in a small petri dish in which eggs are kept under a culture medium.
  • The next step is to incubate both sperm and eggs in the laboratory in a dish.  This will make the fertilization as if they would do in a natural manner in the body.
Apart from conventional insemination, intra-cytoplasmic injection method can also be used for the fertilization process. In the next morning, the IVF specialists will check fertilization.

Transfer of embryo

The next step that has to take place after fertilization is embryo transfer. This can take around 1to 6 days after egg retrieval. Genetic tests are performed to find out more about the embryo. After this, only selected embryo is transferred into the uterus. To increase the success rate of the entire IVF treatment, the healthiest embryo is transferred. The embryologist on the different grading system checks each embryo.

For embryo transfer

  • A flexible catheter is utilized in the process of embryo transfer to the uterus.
  • Abdominal ultrasound is also performed for finding the proper location to place the embryo.
  • Further development of the embryo will take place inside the uterus. Once the embryo gets hatched, it will get implanted in the uterus lining after 1 or 2 days of the transfer of the embryo.
In cases, the female partner is older than they are provided with assisted hatching. This assisted hatching is a process in which a small hole is made in the area around the flexible shell. This shell is helpful in surrounding the cells of the embryo.

Conduction of pregnancy and blood test

This is the last process of the treatment where the blood test will be done for pregnancy checking. These tests are conducted after two weeks of embryo transfer.  If you get a confirmation for the pregnancy then other tests and ultrasounds will be done.
